The century-old buildings lining Mackay Street in Shaughnessy Village hide a closely guarded secret for Montreal music lovers. The <\/span>Upstairs offers nightly jazz concerts appealing to both newcomers and true fans (like us!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discreet fa\u00e7ade sets the tone: the atmosphere is understated and tasteful. Black and white are the primary colors, much like the aesthetics of a musical score.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Around 9:00pm, the place fills with groups of friends and music lovers. Here, we eat and listen to jazz! The menus and risers are decorated with a piano key motif, and the walls feature pictures of the great masters of jazz such as Miles Davis, Nina Simone and Louis Armstrong. One of the hottest spots in a changing Montreal, <\/span>Upstairs has been animating the scene for over 20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n

Let yourself be swept away by the sounds of piano, bass, guitar and saxophone while sipping a Negroni or Old Fashioned: you\u2019ll be transported to John Coltrane\u2019s New York! The jazz bar also offers a wide selection of beer and wine and a varied menu of dishes (salads, grills, tapas and pasta.) A modest sum of $8 (most of the time) will be added to your bill for the musical entertainment. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

We had the chance to hear the Sam Dickinson Trio, who performed jazz classics and original compositions to the delight of the mesmerized audience. The three musicians – a drummer, a guitarist and a bass player – are from Toronto. They\u2019re regulars at <\/span>Upstairs, so you\u2019ll certainly get the chance to hear them!<\/p>\n\n\n

Our low-budget suggestion<\/span>:<\/strong> The show is free if you get there for the last third of the show! You can enjoy half an hour of great jazz music, without spending a dime. It\u2019s the ideal place to visit!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
